Ah yes - let's talk about how we are approaching this issue of great
magnitude - the New IBLCE Scope of Practice, because Betsy is correct - how
we approach it may very well have a huge impact on the outcome.
Unfortunately she was not specific about that in her first post - she did
say sit back and wait. Thank you for clarifying your point.

So here are my thoughts:

We could all shut up right now - no more letters, no more communication, no
one tell anyone else who may not have heard about this.I mean, a whole bunch
of us have written our nice little letters that should be enough right? So
let's all sit back and wait and see. It's not complacency; it's just that
we've done our writing and complaining so let's see what they have to say.
(Please know I am being 100% sarcastic here!)

Interestingly enough we have been discussing this since October 24. Today
is October 29 - that is 5 days worth of discussion and a lot of discussion
at that. Big glaring missing thing tho - absolutely NO comment from IBLCE.
NOTHING. NADA. Not even a comment of "now, now, dears, nothing to worry
about - you're just overreacting is all!", or "Do as we say - Resistance is
Futile!" What is wrong with this picture? Most of us started sending in
letters 5 days ago. Has anyone gotten a response? I certainly haven't.
Not even a form letter.I feel so slighted by that! Not only that, I have
yet to receive any notification of any kind re: the new SoP. Makes me
wonder what really is going on.why aren't we being made aware of these
things - what's up with giving all the people who took the exam that
information and not the rest of us? Sneaking in the back door is NOT the
action of a professional entity in my book. And personally, if this is how
this entity wants to practice - well, maybe I don't want to be associated
with it.My personal ethics seem to be much higher than theirs - I don't
sneak in back doors.

Another thought: I really liked Regina's post on being a rebel and not
sitting quietly as we are forced into submission and unable to perform our
jobs without risking our certification which is a huge risk to all of us:
those who have no other medical certification and those with that
certification who forget to take off their LC hat while talking to a client.
I like being a rebel.who else likes being a rebel?? I think many of us
do.so, let's keep it up! We could make Billy Idol's song Rebel Yell out
theme song! "With a Rebel Yell, she cried More, more, more!!!" More
letters!!!

The way we handle this certainly will have an impact on the outcome - if we
stop speaking out now and stop encouraging others to speak out then we will
lose our voice and IBLCE will no longer hear us the way they need to. If we
continue to get everyone around the world involved in a letter writing
campaign and flood the e-mail-boxes of the board members then they will have
to listen. And perhaps they will even acknowledge us and act.

I seriously doubt that IBLCE board members want to kill the IBLCE, but if
they don't listen to the members and make changes NOW they certainly will.
Whether or not they do anything is a whole 'nother story.time will tell on
that - but I think we also need to look at how much time they take to figure
this out. So far the entire group of IBCLC's worldwide has been practicing
in direct contradiction to their Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics
putting 100% of us at risk. Medical certifications or not - if you have
forgotten to take off your LC hat even once while talking with a patient and
giving correct information on anything that the Dr. may have gotten wrong -
you just blew it. And for those of you in other countries that don't
practice in the same (sometimes ridiculous) way that the USA does - you are
really screwed. We can all kiss our certifications GoodBye!

This is not something that should be dealt with at the next board meeting 3
months down the line.this needs to be dealt with NOW. At the very least, a
public apology should be made and this SoP revoked immediately for
rewording/reworking.

So, before I go get my dinner, my consult went well. Discovered that mommy
got virtually no help (maybe 15 min) for her BF because she was a 2nd time
mom and BF her first daughter (That was hell for her, btw) and they were
very busy the day baby was born. Baby was perfect in every way, corrected
latch and positioning and had a great chat with mom's mom who used to be an
IBCLC long ago - grandfathered in when the IBLCE was first starting up and
the testing was coming in. It was great to talk with someone who had done
so long ago what I now do. She also didn't want to tell me she used to be
an LC - she mentioned the nipple sandwich which got my ears perked up in a
hurry! I made her tell me.it was pretty funny.

At any rate - everyone please continue to spread the word, get people
writing, get it out there - continue to let IBLCE know they have a big ole
messy diaper to clean up! :-)

Warmly,

Jaye

Glad I don't have that kind of mess to clean up!
