I have to respectfully disagree with dr Newman (allthought I seem not to be allowed to, since he's some patient's HCP). I do not think sugarwater is a suitable food substitute. If no milk from baby's own mom is available and no other human milk, I'd opt for a milk substitute, not sugarwater. If one is looking for hydration and none of the human milk options is there I'd opt for ORS.

  Warmly,

Just to follow-up with my question as to how long glucose water can be used for supplementation, I was unable to find any mention in my conference notes from Jack Newman, but I did have someone send me the following:

"The third choice is plain sugar water, which can be used for about 24 to 48 hours." p. 86, Dr. Jack Newman's Guide to Breastfeeding (2000).
