Good morning,
There was a letter in Dear Margo (an advice column) today in which
a woman was reluctant to flush the toilet and wash her hands in her
workplace bathroom when another woman was making business calls while
pumping for her baby. Here is my response.
Dear Margo,
This is in response to "Stumped on the top floor" who was concerned
about the noise of flushing toilets and washing hands while another
woman made business calls while pumping milk for her child. Her
consideration of her colleague is commendable. She rightly pointed
out that "a ladies room is not a phone booth." A ladies room is also
not a kitchen. Would any of us prepare or eat lunch there? She and
her concerned co-workers could help her to find a better place, an
empty office or conference room perhaps. Setting up a common pumping
location would benefit new mothers in all of the companies on her
floor and even in the building.
Pumping at work usually only lasts for a few months and research has
shown that the temporary inconvenience pays for itself in a healthier
mother and baby, fewer sick days to care for baby and a more
dedicated worker when she knows that her employers care enough to
make pumping possible and pleasant.
