Yesterday a mom presented with a question I am not sure how to answer -
have her permission to post. Mom wanted to become a breastmilk donor for
our local bank and had her milk (repeatedly) tested from the bank. There was
S.aureus in all the samples and the people from the bank are now pushing
mom to have a course of antibiotics (it is very different from the things in the
USA - milk bank donors get paid for their milk in our country but they are still
so few that the bank makes everything to convince a prospective donor to
join and donate as long as possible). She is not willing to go for the antibiotics
because neither she nor her baby experience any problems. But from the bank
apparently told her that she can feed her baby from the breast, but cannot
use her frozen milk to feed him because it will harm him (mom was not specific
about what harm exactly is there supposed to be - she recollects it had
something to do with bacterial growth after milk has been thawed?!). She is
now worried because she is returning to work in some months and doesn't
want to throw away her frozen milk.
As far as my limited understanding goes, there should be no problem with the
use of her frozen milk for her own baby - am I right and were can I find more
info I can share with her? Are there any specific precautions for the use of
the frozen and then for the thawed milk when there is S.aureus? And what
about if mom and baby do get treated with antibiotics - I suppose in this case
she cannot use her previously frozen milk without risking reinfection of the
baby (and hers through him)?
