There is at least one pediatrician acting as chapter breastfeeding
coordinator for the AAP in every state (I'm one of the two in WI) who can
help with education and promotion of breastfeeding on a doc-to-doc level. I
have given "breastfeeding basics for physicians" lectures as part of my
role as chapter breastfeeding coordinator in WI.
Any tips on how to deal with one of our family docs who actively discourages breastfeeding? We do not have pediatricians here and new Moms take their babies to him.At the first sign of problems he encourages them to wean. Moms have told me that he asks them at every visit if they have started bottle feeding yet. I know that he has one grown son and I strongly suspect that he was not breast-fed.
I have tried a friendly approach to discuss this with him but he dismisses breastfeeding as 'a bunch of crazy women' (!)
I am close to reporting him formally but he is getting on in years and will ( hopefully) retire soon. I - on the other hand - am close to tearing my hair out!
