I believe metformin has helped PCOS mothers *when they have taken it during
pregnancy.* Something about the action on blood sugar helps regulate the
other hormones so that the breasts do change. I have not encountered any
research that indicates metformin would help a postpartum mother with milk
supply issues, unless she was planning a subsequent pregnancy.

I know one mother with PCOS who did not make any milk for her first baby,
but is taking metformin during this pregnancy and has noticed drops of
colostrum already (at around 30 weeks!)...so we're very hopeful.

Of course, with PCOS, it is difficult to know for sure exactly what did the
trick, as each mother reacts differently to the syndrome and each pregnancy
for each mother will even be different in terms of the syndrome.

I am, of course, incredibly interested in learning as much as I can about
this subject, because very little breaks my heart more than to meet a mother
who desperately wants to breastfeed but has extreme difficulty due to
something like this. In the midst of all the mothers with abundnt supplies
who choose not to breastfeed, it feels like one of those giant injustices of
the world.
