I have mixed feelings about this. I always feel badly for the mother who
stops trying to breastfeed directly because she is scared. But moreover, in
WIC, we have a limited number of pumps. We have to prioritize who they go
to- first for premies and sick infants, then to problem situations I'm
dealing with, then working/school. I've started to have mothers who have
become dependent on the pump and don't want to try to breastfeed anymore.
They don't want to "torture the baby" or go through the work of getting baby
back to breast, though they could if they wanted to. Do I then tell my
working mothers and students too bad, we can't help you now because someone
else doesn't want to help their baby back to the breast and so we're out of
pumps? It has become a dilemma. The concept of choice to exclusively pump
is fine when the mother assumes the financial burden, but I am in a
different place and really struggling with this.

Lisa
