How aggrivating!

I am a lay person, but my understanding is that, even if a mother's wishes are contrary to hospital policy, the doctors and nurses can't really MAKE her do anything. Please correct me if I am wrong about this.

Still, this puts mothers in a position of having to fight the staff while they are recovering from childbirth. For my experience working with pregnant and new mothers, they are sometimes not terribly assertive. Even I rolled over on a few issues of hospital policy during my last birth, such as having an IV, even though I was well-hydrated and not receiving any pain medication. I did put my foot down when the L&D nurse told me that I couldn't tandem nurse becasue it wasn't "safe."

I also suppose that an overzealous nurse could construe a mother's refusal to disturb a sleeping baby could lead her to report the mother for some form of medical neglect.

  Feeling a bit annoyed,

Subject: Unsafe in mother's arms

Maybe I'm suffering from late postpartum depression - is it too late when my
baby is 31?

I just heard that the SIDS nurse is now telling all the PHNs that they MUST
tell mothers that if their baby falls asleep in their arms, they must turn
the baby over on his back...

I can't say anything right now - I'm too depressed!
