It makes one wonder how many choose to become parents because that is what society and their family expect them to do and even pressures them both overtly and subtly. That is, however, another subject and somewhat off topic.
In addition to active listening which should, IMO, be the first approach, why not ask the mom "What do you see as being different after you wean the baby?" Try to get her to be specific. Then you could help her see the ways babies take time and "interrupt" her prevoius lifestyle regardless of feeding method. If she still decides to wean from the breast, at least it will be with a little more realistic picture of the time and attention babies take. For example, if she says she won't be spending as much time feeding the baby, discuss the time it takes to prepare, warm, wash up after etc. when bottle feeding. In addition, most of these activities are usually done standing up. At least the time spent nursing is done sitting down-definitely more relaxing. Now, if the family can afford frequent babysitters, household help, etc. then perhaps not nursing will be "less demanding" on the mom, but for the average family, the work of caring for a baby will still fall primarily on the mom regardloess of feeding method.
Perhaps those electronic dolls that are used in teen pregbancy prevention programs should be required of all prospective parents so they really get to know what they're getting themselves into! (not totally tongue in cheek)
