Dear Lactnetters,
Permission to post from a mom who took this med (buprenorphrine) in
pregnancy (Hale says Class C risk in pregnancy and L3 risk in breastfeeding) and
continues on it postpartum. AAP has not reviewed this med, at least according to
the 2004 edition of Hale. It is a narcotic analgesic.
The baby was determined to be showing withdrawal signs and was started on
Morphine. The is three weeks old, still hospitalized and has had a tapering
down dose in the last week and a half. I don't really know why the baby was
not put on Phenobarbital and discharged.
The baby is very fussy in the evening, usually around 7 to 10 or 11 PM. He
has normal breastfeeding stools, some seedy and some runny, more liquid at
times. When it is more liquid, the baby receives a point on the abstinence
score. This baby also gets points for being fussy, high tone, etc. What she
describes could sound a lot like a colicky baby. Wt. gain is good. Back to
birth weight before 2 weeks. Mom has a great milk supply.
If anyone has had experience with a baby whose mom took this med in
pregnancy and can report on its effect on her newborn, would you share your
experience with the list?
Thank you for your assistance.
