Not on the immediate topic, but once this mom goes back to work, if she can
express even a little bit during the day that will help a lot with keeping
her supply up for the evenings. I think it's hard to get your body to go
completely off milk production for 8 hours, then expect to fully meet the
baby's needs outside of work. If she's not able to pump and save the milk
during the day, I would recommend that she had express as much as possible
one time per day - just for supply. When I've had to do this, I just go into
a toilet stall with a stack of paper towels, express into the towels, and
throw them away. It seems like a waste - but it keeps the milk there. I
didn't make this a regular habit, but when each of my babies was 16 months
old, I had a few all day conventions for work - no good option to store
milk, walking around a huge convention center all day, no good option for
storing the pump between sessions, and I found that this method of "pump and
dump" kept me comfortable and kept my milk supply up quite satisfactorily.
OK, I know it means you're technically putting "biohazard" material in the
regular trash, so if you're worried about that, express into tissues and
flush them - but the paper towels are more absorbant. You could even get a
paper cup, express into that, and pour the milk out. Lots of ways to manage
it, but yet another reason for all moms to be proficient at manual
expression!
Best of luck to this mom getting her supply back up! I don't know if you
specified how soon she goes back to work - can you add that piece of
information?
