On some level, I think the changes to scope of practice may be to give
IBLCE something to use against the bad IBCLCs who are prescribing or
bashing doctors. But I also wonder about this, and if we can still give
written information to mothers. Look at what information is in the BAB
about galactagogues including herbs. Is giving this information
"prescribing?" If a doctor says that an obviously tongue tied baby is ok
and just give bottles, are we contradicting him or her to tell mothers
what information we have on frenulum clipping and having further
assessment? I always give written information rather than personal
opinion on these issues but even that may be against the new scope of
practice.
I personally find that this profession is going in directions that I
find troubling. Passing the exam is fairly easy, in my opinion. The
problem with the exam is that it doesn't test how well a candidate can
assess breastfeeding in person, whether the candidate follows our code
of ethics, or even knows about our standards of practice.
I find the second credential and this new scope of practice very
troubling for the future of our profession.
