I seem to remember reading that babies with nicotine withdrawal so not
receive enough nicotine via breastmilk to satisfy their craving. At the
hospital where I work, about 40% of the mothers smoke, some heavily. Their
babies do seem to suffer withdrawal symptoms. From about day 2 or 3 they
are irritable - often inconsolable - and tend to have a loud, high-pitched
scream.
