Babies can't feed at the mall, but smokers can puff away
Nice report by Debbie Cafazzo, "Lactation intolerance" (The News Tribune,
Sept 24)
Recently, I placed the question of "breastfeeding or smoking in public" on
the discussion board of more than 25 newspapers.
I emphasized for these readers to think about which is more harmful:
smoking in public or breastfeeding in public?
Then I commented that of course we know which is more harmful, but in
reality, which is more appropriate today?
One of my favorite comments was how sad it was that we forced a mother into
a dirty bathroom stall to breastfeed her baby while we allow smokers to blow
their toxic secondhand smoke in our faces.
Several forum members express, "Uh, II never thought of it like this
before."
Regretfully, we know that smoking has been and continues to be more
acceptable in the public than a mother breastfeeding.
Most smokers shared that they thought breastfeeding should be more
acceptable than smoking in public.
Hopefully, one day in the US breastfeeding will be more appropriate than
smoking in public.
