At the risk of being pelted with unpopularity (I am not current on this
thread, so perhaps mine is not such an unpopular opinion), I will admit
to being fully supportive of us having to retake our board exam every
ten years. I took it this year, having completed my tenth year, and
learned yesterday with some relief that I passed.

Why am I in favor of putting myself through that every ten years?

Because if, after ten years of contact with mothers and babies, I FAIL
IT I don't belong anywhere near nursing mothers & babies.

I should be able to pass it. This should not be a problem for me. If
it IS a problem for me, then the world needs to know about it.

The other reason I support it is that, as the daughter of a
pediatrician, I believe that nothing could keep some doctors up-to-date
on the latest quite as well as having to retake their test would.
There's something about having to study for an exam that ensures you're
reading the latest and staying current. Continuing education is easier
then retaking the exam. That the point, it seems to me - challenging
the brain cells more than what can be accomplished by year upon year and
decade upon decade of continuing education. Perhaps I'm wrong but
that's my opinion...

I am a public school teacher and I must recertify every 5 years (in
Maryland) by proof of continuing education. An upgraded certificate
requires
a Master's degree in a certain amount of time after first certification.
