A good reference is Ruth Lawrence's book
However I have been doing prolactin levels on women when there is a
delay in onset of lactation

1. 8374 - day 6, lactated well
2. 26000 - had renal failure, endocrinologist was not worried, he said
it was normal for lactating women, she lactated well
3. 1734 - done on day 4-5, she became "engorged" with breast changes
but did not go on to lactate well
4. 12541 - day 5, lactated well

As you can see I don't organise prolactin levels often. I do it before
I use domperidone for women who present like they may have a primary
lactation failure, both by their clinical presentation and by their
history.

I am beginning to get a suspicion about the lower level readings. The
problem with the levels is they need to be done a good while after
feeding or expressing, otherwise you get the surge with the feed and
this muddies the water so to speak.
