Much as it seems to go against my activist personality, I do not like
the concept of a nurse-in, especially as it relates to situaitons such
as the VS incidents. I have certainly participated in peaceful protest
many times in my life, but one must always look at the outcome that is
intended. There is an energy created in all situations and retaliation
of this sort only creates negative energy. I have no problem being
heavy-handed with HCP's and policy-makers who ought to be doing their
jobs and actively promoting and protecting breastfeeding, but the
teen-age clerks in a specialty shop? Having worked for 6 years in
retail as a teenager and in college, I can tell you that the turn-over
among the clerks is very high. What can be accomplished by approaching
them in this way? I truly believe that breastfeeding wherever we are
and behaving as if our relationships with our babies are the norm is
far more effective--it is known energetically as entrainment. When a
mother asks to breastfeed, she sets the tone that implies someone can
deny her. We need to never give that impression and we should educate
mothers in this way. I think it is the behaviour of HCPs and mothers
that must change--both need to behave as if breastfeeding is normal and
essential--then the energy will shift and the ignorance of retail
clerks or anyone else for that matter will be irrelevent.
