In regards to the police officers and bullet proof vest, I once had a patient who was an officer. On the day of the birth of her baby she announced to me that she was a smoker and was not going to quit and that she drinks 8-10 Dr. Peppers a day and is not quiting that either. I told her the concerns with both of those issues talked about dehydration, nicotine etc and that we would need to follow her closely for milk supply concerns. Her baby grew wonderfully and had doubled birth weight by 3 months, she had been back to work one month working the desk, pumping was going very well. It was only after a couple weeks back on the beat that she began to notice a decrease in milk supply and it was very significant by a month after. Given all the issues that she had going against a good milk supply, it was clear the only factor that made the biggest difference was the bullet proof vest, she said the pressure is very great. So don't downplay that concern and factor in milk suppression.
