I carry a cheap ($30) vacuum gauge that I purchased from Medela.  It  
has been one of the best investments!  You can instantly pop it on  
the flange and measure the suction strength.  Then the mom can make a  
decision about whether she wants to spend her valuable time using a  
pump that is not working optimally, or invest in a pump that actually  
works!
