Dear Colleagues,
Karyn-Grace speaks my mind exactly -- IBLCE needs US! I know it
"should" not be that way, but for many reasons, this is the way it
is. They do not have the deep pockets or many years of tradition of
other agencies who may be doing things better for their own people.
But they are currently the best we have, and unless passionate people
such as ourselves roll up our sleeves and get involved, nothing will
change. Did the 7 founders of LLL wring their hands that moms just
should not be given twilight sleep and separated from their babies
for days and then told to schedule feed? No, they figured out what
needed to be done to change it, and did it. The climate they faced
was MUCH worse than what we are facing now.
If anyone has decided to not recertify as a form of protest, then I
hope you will also write a letter to IBLCE letting them know why you
have made this decision. Otherwise your message will not be heard.
Or better yet, tell them what you feel they should be doing to
support our common mission of excellent lactation care providers, and
how you can help.
I really believe that no one on the IBLCE board is out to hurt us, or
denigrate our credential. We all want the same thing, we just have
different ideas of how to accomplish it. I have to respect that
people on the IBLCE board are dealing with hard issues, and they may
not know what to do. Could they be handling this better? Of
course. The second credential and the SOP were not handled well.
But I have not seen ANY evidence that they acted maliciously, other
than the circular argument of people feeling disrespected so
therefore that must have been their intent. I do think they should
(oops, there is that word again) have a delegate to Lactnet, but like
us, they are probably all very busy and doing the best they can with
what they have. I will feel this way until I see concrete evidence
to the contrary.
Warmly,
Lynnette Hafken, IBCLC
