A deadly outbreak of diarrhea among children in Botswana last year is
forcing international health experts to reconsider strategies that encourage
HIV-infected mothers in poor countries to bottle-feed their babies.
The Botswana babies who took infant formula instead of breast milk were 50
times more likely to come down with a range of potentially deadly
gastrointestinal diseases after floodwaters caused widespread contamination
of water supplies.
