Right...but, if YOU have seen these types of mothers, aren't YOU their
support? Can not YOU, as the IBCLC who has been in contact with them, give
them the information they need, teach them with truth, follow up and refer?
I agree that in some very extreme cases breastfeeding is not suitable because
of individual circumstances; however, I don't not think it is in the mother's or
the baby's best interest to *assume* that breastfeeding is not suitable or
that bottle-feeding is the only course for that particular dyad.
In ALL the situations you listed, breastfeeding can be the ONE thing that heals
the mother from her addictions and from her past trauma, and can be the ONE
thing that establishes a life-long bond between the mother and her child. In
many of these circumstances breastfeeding can truly be life-changing.
