In my experience breastfed kidos who are this sick from rotovirus continue to
vomit off and on for a few days. You think they are just fine and then they
throw up again, 5, 10, 15, or even 24 hours after you think they have stopped,
just to keep you busy. As long as the vomiting is less frequent and the
child is urinating at least once every 8 hours they are doing OK. Now, while
after a viral gastritis (such as rotovirus) humans do experience temporary lactose
intolerance from dairy products, human milk is not considered a dairy
product. And even if it was, it contains too many valuable substances that either
help the gut heal or attach the virus itself to be withheld. There is no doubt
that she should follow her instinct to continue to breastfeed. It would be
great if she could show the WHO document supplied by the previous poster to her
doc and educate him. Chris
