Okay, I'll try not to be a "post-whore" as they say, but this is an
issue I've encountered. If memory serves correctly, Dr. Jan Riordan
did nutritional research on this particular topic. What she found (I'm
paraphrasing) is that while 80% of women DO seem to lose weight rapidly
(and there's definitely a multi-stage drop down in weight), 20% of
women seemed to be incapable of losing weight during lactation. Those
of us unlucky enough to be in that 20% might find that terribly unfair
but it does appear to be a survival of the species thing. There is
GREAT debate STILL on just how many calories are required to support
lactation and I suspect that part of the reason (besides basing it on
how many calories formula contains--sigh--is related to the fact that
different mothers and different babies are more or less 'efficient' at
making milk)
I'll try and search for the specific published articles but I do know
that weight loss and lactation HAS been reported in the American
Journal of Public Health. I'm not sure if the journals are available
online to non-APHA members but it's worth a try. In the mean time, if
my power stays on, I'll try and get back to the list on this. Any LLLI
Ls APLs with Riodan's or other's work want to chime in on this?
Ciao for now,
Chris
