I thoroughly endorse Karleen's comments, below, based on my many years of
supporting mothers who are relactating or bringing in a milk supply for the
first time, as well as my personal experiences.
I have become more and more convinced, espec since doing a recent literature
review, that a major obstacle is bottle use, before or during relactation or
when attempting to build up a supply that wan't fully established after
birth. This is something i plan some day to investigate - in that elusive
distant future when I "have more time".

I'm not a fan of the interpretations of the prolactin receptor theory that
say that if there's not stimulation early on you don't get enough prolactin
receptors and mothers can never fix this up.....it certainly does not allow
for relactation of induced lactation to work...and they do. Mums who are
relactating or inducing lactation also benefit from galactagogues that
increas prolactin secretion...doesn't matter how long since last lactation
or even if there has been a previous lactation.
