How about surveying the RNs, doctors, especially the Interns and Residents, and other staffers. It's their demand that will justify the room.

We found a small office with an attached restroom. right between the L&D and Post Partum units. We had a divider installed to make two cubicles, and hung drapes across the front for privacy. Both sides have a small wall-hung storage unit, table and chair. One has a Medela Classic and the other has an Ameda SMB50. They can bring their own pumps, of course, but there is no secure place for storage in the pump room.

We use the plastic tubs with names on them for storage of their drip drying kits, have a small dedicated refrigerator that has a freezer section for their "Blue Ice", bought with petty cash ($200 +/-). Clear labeling is recommended. We monitor temps with thermometers in both sections. One wall has a bulletin board for info sheets, handouts, LLL meeting notices, mom to mom messages, small pics of babies (no names, for privacy). It is used regularly and open 24 hours.

Whenever Mgmt starts examining it with greedy eyes, they learn the Docs want to keep it. It's a "staff satisfier".

Aside from the fact that the outpatient room would not be available 24 hours, does anyone have any information on literature supporting a separate room for hospital employees to pump and store their milk?
