My favorite true story to reassure anxious moms (bfdg not going right in
first week) follows -

I worked for 6 weeks with delightful mom with flowing, perfectly-shape
brsts. Baby would shut down any time brst in mouth. Zero action. Mom in
tears. She decided this was too stressful all round and pumped/bottled for
3 months. At that point I get a call "My baby is refusing all bottles"
(panic in voice). Turns out she leaned over her 3mo to pick up the pump
flanges. Her brsts were bare. He lunged at a breast and had refused all
bottles since. He never took another and gained beautifully.

Postscript - was mom happy? Well, not totally. She now felt tied down by
exclusive bfdg. Sigh.

Just worked with a wriggly little one who was refusing a good latch. Placed
him firmly belly to belly such that he arched neck slightly and he latched
perfectly w/o mom lifting a finger. I like to pass on to moms Rebecca
Glover's comment that this is baby's instinctive position.

I don't think we should be surprised when babies get back to breast weeks or
months after some initial insult. I see it frequently. The big problem is
guiding mom thru the waiting period and reassuring her when "friends" are
telling her if she doesn't get the baby bfdg right away he never will.
Snort - it's what they love to do (when ready).
