Not really a rant, more a groan.
A friend of mine was blessed with her first grandchild this week. Everything
went well and the new mother is nursing but the baby is crying all the time!
Another friend, who lives in the same building, called me to ask about colic
cures and what foods the new Mom should cut out of her diet. I suggested
that it might be a good idea for me to come over and have a look, this
sounded more like a nursing problem than an allergy problem.
Anyway, I just spoke to the new grandmom and she said that it was definitly
colic, she was holding the baby while she was talking to me and she could feel
her little tummy muscles tightening up.
Sigh number one.
(Just for the record, I was talking to the grandmother about substitute
teaching for her while she went away for a night and not about the new baby.
I asked how mommy and baby were, that's all.)
Now it could be colic or allergies, or it could be tounge-tie or oversupply or
lots of other things and here I am biting my tounge because, unless asked, it's
none of my business.
Sigh number two
It will probably resolve itself; the family is very pro-nursing, but it seems a
shame to get off to a rough start if there might be a solution.
On another subject, I have to agree with the LactNetter (sorry, I can't
remember who it was and I deleted the e-mail) who said that it's hard to
equate breastfeeding with carseats and back sleeping. Breastfeeding is a all-
of-myself-commitment, while carseats and back sleeping are relatively easy
habits to aquire.
