I found this topic of the Wolf and Glass presentation so fascinating
(okay, I thought the entire two days were absolutely delicious), but
recall the pattern to be suck/swallow/exhale/inhale/suck/ etc. Just in
case it's relevant to the argument, I thought I'd check, especially since
I have the Wolf and Glass Syllabus already out on my desk, I double-
checked my memory. The study they referenced for this pattern was:
Selley, W.G., R.E. Ellis, F.C. Flack and W.A. Brooks. 1990. Coordination
of sucking, swallowing, and breathing in the newborn: its relationship to
infant feeding and normal development. BRITISH DISORDERS OF COMMUNICATION
25:311-327.
I googled the study hoping I could read it myself but don't have the
proper memberships to access anything beyond the summary. In that google
search, though, I found another study that quotes Selley's study,
titled "Measuring Breathing and Swallowing Coordination in Human Infants
using Kay Elemetrics Swallowing Workstation."
It says, "Nutritive swallowing of healthy full-term infants occur
predominately at the inspiratory-expiratory cusp, otherwise in mid-
expiration and occasionally at the expiratory-inspiratory cusp. An infant
whose breathing-swallowing coordination deviates from this pattern could
be considered, 'disordered.' For instance, premature infants (33 weeks
post-conception), unlike full-term infants, swallow predominately during
respiratory pauses."
I think it's interesting to note that it specifies, "The adult pattern of
breathing-swallowing coordination during eating and drinking is well-
established, with 75-95% of swallows beginning in the respiratory phase
compared to 39% in newborns." Maybe this is part of the "mature swallow"
mentioned during the W&G conference.

Food for thought...
