Pamela Morrison's 11 point description of her clinical experience with the
effect of oral contraceptives on breastfeeding correlates exactly with my
experience over 15 years as a La Leche League leader and 5 years as an
IBCLC. I would add:
12. These mothers are universally told that "these won't affect your
breastfeeding at all" and are furious to find out otherwise.
I also find that some of the mothers who are strongly pro-life in their
views are told there is "no way" that breakthrough ovulation can occur and
feel betrayed when in their research about effects on breastfeeding they
find out otherwise. Regardless of your views, if a mother specifically asks
a question, it should be truthfully answered. All this makes me wonder if
these doctors have ever read the package insert.
I think particular notice should be taken as Pamela mentions in #7, that
mothers do not consider oral contraceptives medications and it is important
to ask them specifically about them.
I would love to see some well-designed, well-carried out research on this.
