Dear friends,
This seems to me to be an extremely low percentage of IBCLC's, it's all people from other professions and organisation, and the tail end some IBCLCs are invited in as well.
How does reaching the highest score in a daylong multiplechoice test make someone automatically fit for serving in a board?
I fail to see any position for an IBCLC who is not medically based. This sure will add to the medical modelling for IBCLCs, adding up to other bumps in the road to becoming an IBCLC for those without former medical/nursing/midwifery training.
Warmly,
Gonneke, IBCLC, LLLL in southern Netherlands where the car windows were frozen first time this autumn.

There are three ways one can become a member of the IBLCE Board:
1. Most of the positions are delegated by the professional association of
the pediatricians, thought at the time of the inception of the IBLCE, that
would be in a supervisory role over LC's. This position is filled by the AAP.
The other "designated" positions are held by 'related' professional
associations:
the LLLI Medical Associate Delegate
the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine Delegate
the Australian Breastfeeding Association Delegate
the LLLI Delegate
the ILCA Delegate
The Royal College of Midwives (England) Delegate
the American Dietetic Association Delegate
2. Then, there are three regional representatives, one each from Europe,
Asia and Canada. These are nominated regionally and, with input from the
European and Australian IBLCE regional offices, country coordinators, the
Washington office decides who wins these.
3. Finally, there are the self-nominated positions. When these are vacant,
there is a call for nominations published on the IBLCE website. If you are
interested in one of these positions, you submit a resume and the Executive
Director selects the winner, perhaps with input from the Board Chair.
These positions are:
nurse educator of lactation consultants
nurse educator of peer counselors
treasurer (preferably a CPA/IBCLC)
PhD lactation researcher
public member
The Board is not an easy nut to crack. There is no "Jane IBCLC" position
representing the rank and file. The closest IBLCE comes to this policy is
including the highest scorer taking the exam for the first time on the next
year's exam development committee.
