Hi Lactnetters
I (was) a peer counselor for WIC/MSUE and I have been working with a mom who had/has PCOS and Diabetes. She was unable to bf past about 1.5 months. Her baby has been doing poorly on alimentum formula, after trying several of the "regular" formulas. Very colicky and constipated and apathetic... she was a preemie, also.
We got a month's supply from the milk bank here, but were unable to get medicade to cover continued human donor milk. They are requesting further review from a specialist from either Devos Childrens' in Grand Rapids, MI, or UofM....
Please email me off list if you are, or you know a specialist...M.D. or PhD. who would be willing to look at this mother/baby dyad and recommend that they recieve donor milk. Or at least, look at them, whether you could make that recommendation would obviously depend on your findings.
I am so frustrated that i have been unsucessful in getting medicade to approve this out of hospital donor milk prescription.
The pediatrician was somewhat unsure of how to write the script... this is the first case in MI that I know of, where we are trying to get medicade to cover this expense for this baby. It has been weeks of back and forth with the peds office, faxing letters and chart notes to the medicade review doctors, which, unsuprisingly, rejected the claim for various reasons... finally coming up with wanting further review by a specialist.
Apparently, the fact that it would be considered the best standard of care, over formula, is not good enough.
Anyway, sorry to ramble on. It's very early, I've had very little sleep and I could really use some help.
   Thanks in advance.
