I stumbled across this today:
http://www.nappyinformationservice.co.uk/articles_breastfeeding.htm
Billed as being by a "consultant paediatrician", the article begins,
"Lactation is found in mammals and certain species of reptiles and
birds to provide protection and nutrition for infants."
I did a double-take. I know some non-mammals secrete substances for
their young (discus fish, for example, and solid so-called "crop
milk" from the crop or digestive tract of some birds - both sexes,
apparently) - but surely this isn't, but definition, "lactation"?
(Yes, the source is suspect. On another page, it recommends to start
giving babies meat, beans and dairy products from four months, and
egg and raw carrot from six months.)
