I *love* unpasteurized cider and can tell you what apples people use and how
green they are. That said -- unpasteurized cider can be a danger to the
mother, most specifically because of the risk of e.coli from things like
deer scat. (Deer love apple trees, and ciders are often made from "drops"
but you don't want "droppings"!
Some of the e.coli we have been seeing in the past few years has literally
been fatal. (eg the spinach in the past month) It's just not worth it to
drink unpasteurized cider unless you've seen the water and soap the apples
have been washed and rinsed with! (I think I remember a law about
pasteurized cider a while back, in fact. But I know you can buy fresh
unpasteurized here in Vermont, too.)
It's hard to imagine any physiologic way that e.coli or a parasite could go
through the milk/blood barrier. More likely baby would pick something up off
mom's hands!
