Ok, I know that I am getting grumpy in my old age, but this is my thoughts. Why do we have to make breastfeeding so hard by legislating every detail. No wonder mothers don't want to breastfeed, and
people think that breastfeeding advocates are fanatics. The more signs, areas, policies that are
created/legislated, the more it seems complicated and abnormal.
Why do we have to ask airports to create pumping areas? Airports are
struggling to ensure the safety of their passengers, screen for terrorists and dangerous substances,
and listen to the complaints of hundreds of irate customers each day,
the majority of which do not need to use a breastpump and
do not care if there isn't a electric outlet available for a breast pump.
Why not just use some common sense.
If a mother is on a business trip, use the electric pump at the hotel,
and a hand pump at the airport. Or manually express. How long is the flights anyway?
Many mothers do not have a chance to pump during a normal workday, and they adjust.
I have worked with mothers who do not have a chance to pump throughout a work day of
8, 10 or 12 hours (landscapers, military, fastfood, construction cleanup, crabpickers, farmworkers).
Mothers have learned ways to manage breastfeeding for thousands of years without
hang to create policies and procedures. I have been counseling mothers for 26 years
and over those year I have seen many mothers continue
to provide milk for their babies without having to ask for special treatment,
special handling, special policies, special spaces. These are nice, but not necessary.
