Hi, All: I read a fascinating article (for CEU's, no less) in my current
issue of AdvanceNurse, which is a free publication that goes out to RNs in
the USA. I believe it's regional and primarily serves as an inexpensive
recruiting tool for hospitals, etc. This issue's CEU offering was on the
topic of Near Death Experiences (NDE) and how health care providers can
identify this phenomenon and support the patient who experiences this. The
article listed common experiences that most people have during NDE as well
as situations in which NDE is likely to occur. I wasn't surprised to see
cardiac arrest, surgery, accidents listed, but I was taken aback to see
Labor and Delivery as an area where NDE is likely to occur - and not in the
mother. The authors/researchers believe that many babies who are products
of a difficult birth experience NDE and that it can impact their behavior
thruout life. There are researchers currently following children who have
stated that they have experienced NDE as well as those children who are
suspected (based on their behavior) as having an NDE as early as birth.
The implications are staggering, in my mind. I have always felt that
vacuum extraction is an especially barbaric method of delivery. And to
think that a delivery of this type may cause the baby to have a Near Death
Experience?! Wow!
