I had the pleasure of attending a symphony concert this past weekend at
which a Robert Schumann song cycle was performed. The music was written in
1840, the year Schumann won a lawsuit against his future father-in-law to
win the right to marry his beloved Clara. He used as lyrics the poetry of
Adelbert von Chamisso (1781-1838) and was obviously inspired by the poem to
daydream about his courtship, marriage and family life. The audience was
provided a copy of the German lyrics with English translation, and I thought
lactnetters would enjoy the words of the seventh song in the cycle. (Anyone
desiring the German original can e-mail me privately):
On my heart, on my breast
you my delight, you my joy!
Happiness is love,
Love is happiness,
I have said so and will not take it back.
I thought myself overjoyed,
but now I am euphoric.
Only she who suckles, only she who loves
the child she nourishes,
only a mother knows
what it means to love and be happy.
Oh, how I feel for the man
who cannot feel a mother's bliss!
You dear, dear angel, you,
you look at me and smile.
On my heart, on my breast,
you my delight, you my joy.
Jean
