Subject: theory about the scope of practice
Since the Scope of Practice is so limiting, and so US-skewed, do you think
it's a possible reaction to the IBLCE, not an individual IBCLC, getting
sued?>>>
Barbara, this is exactly what I thought when grasping for some sort of
possible reason for such negative, restrictive/unrealistic, cover your hinney,
clueless wording in the sop.
<<<<I agree with all that the Scope of Practice is poorly written. As a
physician I WANT an LC, RN, ward clerk, RT, etc. to challenge any stupid
order I write
- I EXPECT you to do it as part of your own code of ethics. I cannot
possible know everything - I expect other experts in a field to help me.

suggestion for IBLCE - ask Dr Wight to be on the board or other committee
that will revise this sop mess, ....if she is unavailable ask her for some other
possible board or committee members, who understand the issues as she does,
....or arrange for the ABM to have some significant input on the revised sop.
<<<<<Subject: Re: interpretations of scope of practice
<<I think the salient point might be that the doctor or other hcp is the
primary provider and ultimately responsible for the client's care (we could
argue he mother herself is ultimately responsible).>>>
Lisa Marasco responds:<<<I am hoping myself that this is what they meant
more than anything.>>>
suggestion for IBLCE: if this is what was meant to be conveyed, then do so
"the doctor or other hcp is the primary provider and ultimately responsible
for the client's care",.....clarify that the IBCLC is a "consultant" and here's
what consultants Can Do........
<<<Not only do we have to keep on proving
that we know the basics, but we get to pay hundreds of dollars to do it, and
THEN we have to be quiet about those things we know?
Why bother.
Kathleen>>>
indeed, .....the writing has been on the wall for at least a couple of years
now - if this sop mess is not promptly cleaned up the IBLCE will have very
efficiently caused it's own demise, .........sooner than many expected.
