My question being, how do you begin to influence a mother that does not plan
on breastfeeding, given the multiple advantages that have been proven for
not only the infant but the mother as well?

Yes, setting aside the whole "advantages" line of thinking, one way to begin
a discourse is simply to ask "So what have you heard about breastfeeding?"
and let the mother tell what she has heard, and what she thinks might keep her
from meeting her baby's need for early nurturing that includes normal
feeding. This is a strategy that was shared by a lecturer who works for WIC where
she lives and lots of moms were not interested in letting their babies
breastfeed.
