Becky reports:
<<As it is now, babies are not supposed to be in mother's bed
if mom is sleeping (per the hospital lawyer, I have debated this already
at endless meetings). So what happens is: mom nurses, baby falls
asleep, mom puts baby back in the crib, baby wakes up, mom repeats the
procedure until she's had it and sends baby back to the nursery (or asks
for a pacifier, or formula). >>
Sigh. And what we have here is typical "Second Night" where the baby NEEDS
to be w/ mom, snuggled skin to skin, not taken away from the breast (off the
breast, yes, when sucking has slowed to prevent those nasty little blisters
on the end of the nipple), but snuggled up next to mom until baby moves from
light sleep into deep sleep. Of COURSE mom is going to fall asleep....or at
least read the back of her eyelids.
Sigh again.
What better place than in the hospital for mom and baby to sleep together
SAFELY. Isn't that what we are all about? Safe sleep?
If you have a teenager, and you suspect that they are having sex, is your
response to be "don't have sex before you are married" and let it go at that,
or are you going to talk to them about safe sex? What is the responsible
thing to do? While I might desire one thing for my child, am I going to put my
head in the sand, expecting that of course my child will hear and obey me.
"Oh gee, mom said 'don't have sex' so of course I won't". Isn't that sort of
like bedsharing? "Gee, the pediatrician/lactation consultant/hospital/TV ads
say "don't bedshare," so OF COURSE, I'll never do it."
R--IIIIIIIIIIII--GGGGGGGGGGG--HHHHHHHHHHHH--TTTTTTTTTTTTTT.
And what is better? SAFE sleep -- or giving formula/pacifiers/putting the
baby in the nursery and giving mom the idea that FORMULA is the salvation of
all second night scenarios which ARE going to happen once she gets home????
Frustrated in IL....
