The babies who blocked the teat of the bottle with their tongues in
imaging studies were young (early) preterm infants with difficulty
coordinating swallowing and breathing. We can't necessarily extrapolate
from that to ALL babies. The authors didn't see the behavior in babies
closer to term with better respiratory function.
In our own study, we are not seeing teat-blocking with the tongue in
full term infants.
