A request has been made that I clarify my post from the other day about
my credentials. To be PERFECTLY clear...I AM NO LONGER AN IBCLC, nor
do I CLAIM to have the credential. I WAS an IBCLC and LOST the
credential. This does not mean that I am not supportive of the IBCLC
credential; nor does it mean that I am in any way less
supportive/enthusiastic of all professionals who aid, promote and
protect breastfeeding. Once again, I AM NOT AN IBCLC.
Now, to clarify some of the private emails that have been floating
around...I have NEVER been accused of (OR engaged in) copyright
violation activities. I have published extensively and stand by my
work.
My post the other day explaining my illness was simply to explain WHY I
had appeared to "fall of the face of the earth." There were even
rumors that I was DEAD...in fact, I showed up at my 25 high school
reunion (pre-registered) in NY to find that several people had heard
that I died. Remember, there are three sides (at least) to every
story...yours, mine and the truth (I love this little reminder of
perspective).
Something I think that needs to be addressed--and I alluded to--is that
professions and professional organizations (including allied
credentialing bodies) need to develop (as older organizations and
bodies have) a means for truly identifying when people are physically
and/or mentally incapacitated. And, to take this to the next step,
they need to address more than simply kicking them out of the
profession. In my case, I had yet to be identified as having brain
tumors and my then primary care MD had missed the diagnosis repeatedly.
I had one practitioner who was supportive and then later an MD who was
also a TCM who referred me to the best neuroendocrinology center in the
world. I was diagnosed within a week but two months too late to have
saved myself from sanction from the IBLCE. I am permanently barred
from ever using or re-applying for the IBCLC NO MATTER WHAT STATE OF
RECOVERY OR MY KNOWLEDGE BASE. To me, this is an enormous waste. This
problem WILL come up again with others; it's only matter of time in a
profession that is trying to gain acceptance over the long haul.
I have been informed legally that I could challenge the IBLCE ruling
under the Americans with Disabilities Act but quite frankly, life is
too short and I am able to have a valuable impact on women, babies,
families and others WITHOUT the IBCLC after my name.
Any questions are welcome PRIVATELY (unless of course the list mothers
think it beneficial to have an abstract discussion about the topic not
specific to me). I will be on the N Coast of the DR Thursday thru
Sunday and don't know what my wifi status will be but I WILL reply when
I have connectivity again. IF you post to the list on this topic,
please copy me as I'm going no-mail for the days I'm gone).
Thanks again to all that have sent private emails. I enjoy hearing
from you and if you haven't rec'd a personal reply, please do resend it
because we've had several inches of rain a day for 3 days now and the
power goes up and down.
¡Buena Salud y Paz (Good Health and Peace)!
Chris
