Jean's post made me wonder about the issue of hypersensitive
nipples. Is this something a dermatologist can diagnose? I worked
with a mom recently who had constant pain while breastfeeding, and we
treated for thrush and then for staph, but no improvement either
time. She did see a dermatologist, which was not helpful. Latch
appeared perfect, with no compression stripes and excellent milk
transfer. There was no visible damage or irritation on her nipples,
and sx were not consistent with vasospasm. The baby's suck felt
totally normal and there was no evidence of tongue tie. Pumping was
just as painful; she tried pumping and bottle-feeding for three days
on the dermatologist's advice, but it did not help. She weaned at 3
months, despite having really wanted to breastfeed. Any ideas about
where the pain could have come from?
