I continue to be intrigued by the discussion on the relationship between
breastfeeding and the onset of menarche.
I agree that the increase in obesity certainly seems to influence
menarche to initiate earlier, but wonder what other factors are also
having an impact. We consume meat with artificial hormones, and have a
wide variety of chemicals in our environment. Is it possible for the
graphic sexual activity so many children are exposed to via the media to
impact brain and reproductive development?
Then there are just the normal variances of how humans grow. It will
certainly be interesting to see research show how reproductive
development is impacted by breastfeeding. I had not heard of this
before, or at least it didn't register.
I've enjoyed reading the anecdotes of the onset of puberty, so will
share my own.
I was artificially fed as an infant and menarche began at age 16 (I had
high hopes of never starting). I have a family history of osteoporosis,
and was found to be osteopenic by age 37. I breastfed all 3 of my
children, 2 exclusively and supplemented 1 (I didn't know as much then).
With all 3, my period returned when they were 5 months old. I weighed
between 95 and 110 pounds depending on which child it was. So, most of
the "rules" don't seem to apply.
My oldest daughter was exclusively breastfed until 6 months, then weaned
at 20 months with no artificial milk ever. Menarche began at age 14
years 1 month, she is not overweight, but has a stocky build. Daughter #
2 was supplemented throughout breastfeeding (I didn't know better),
weaned at 12 months. She is 15 years 1 month and has not yet had a
period. Though she had artificial milk, she has always been small. She
had an amazing growth spurt this past year, has started to "round out"
and currently is 5 feet (1.5 meter) tall and weighs 80 pounds (36 kg).
3rd child is a son, 8 active years old, breastfed until 26 months.

Still have lots to learn,
Susette RNC BSN
