Dear Lactnetters,
A mom just called my warm line c/o extremely uneven breasts. She
thought she had an infection in the larger one but denies fever, flu
symptoms, warmth to touch or redness, just a feeling of engorgement and
some shooting pain in that breast. Can not raise that arm over her head.
Baby is 10 weeks old and exclusively berastfed. As one breast has gotten
larger and harder the other breast as gotten smaller and producing less
and less milk. In 15 minutes she can pump 6 ounces from the bigger one
with no relief of the hardness and only 1 ounce from the other one. She
has been starting all feeds on the smaller one while baby is most vigorous
and always pumping after feeds. She describes one as a nearly A and the
other overflowing a double D.
Please help. I don't know what to tell her. I suggested motrin for the
discomfort, told her I would consult the wise ones, and try to pump the
larger breast until she got some relief from the pain.
Thanks so much,
Ellen Pinker RN IBCLC
