Crystal: We have a "women's locker room" on the ground floor of the
hospital that has a separate small room with a door that contains a rocker,
a small counter-like shelf running the length of one wall (with an electric
outlet with a still-functioning Ameda SMB), a wall-mounted magazine rack,
and a mirror. There is a pretty wallpaper border on the wall. There is a
container of Cavi-wipes which is used for wiping down the pump after use.
Mothers are expected to provide their own kit and are responsible for
cleaning up after themselves. This room was here when I started 4 years
ago. The only change I have made is to leave my name and extension on the
laminated list of rules and regulations that I have posted on the door. A
while back I was getting complaints from some of the pumping mothers about
other staff using the room to blow dry their hair as the outlet in that
room is the only one located near a mirror. The folks using the room for
personal grooming were leaving hair, etc. all over. Once I let it be known
thru the posted "rules" that that room is to be used for pumping only, the
complaints stopped. The staff up here on OB are allowed to take a unit
pump into an empty patient room and pump, with the same expectation that
they will wipe down the pump after use and clean up after themselves. This
usually works, but occasionally I have to post gentle "reminders". A
couple of years ago, I got a pump for each of the other hospital units
outside of OB, to address the problem of our pumps disappearing. The
staffs of the other units are expected to order a kit from Distribution for
their pumping patient and set up the mother with her own kit and that
unit's pump. Those pumps can also be used by the units' own staff to pump,
if the staff member finds themselves unable to leave her unit to go to the
ground floor. So far, this works pretty well.
