A few thoughts. If mother's nipple tip protrudes through the holes of a
nipple shield, I wonder if her nipple /areolar tissue is very soft/pliable
and if the shield might be too large for this particular mother. I'm
guessing that if a mother had firmer tissue this would be less likely to
happen. I know I've never seen or heard this before. Another thought is
that the baby's suck might be incredibly strong. A compensation for other
areas that are weak? Perhaps an oral motor specialist might help. One
trained in Beckman Oral Motor Assessment Skills. I don't know if OTs or PTs
that Debra Beckman has trained might be on her website.
