I work in a small hospital (L/D, postpartum, nursery).
We average about 25 births/month. I am just starting
up a lactation program and am in the process of
writing up a proposal for my hours. I will be the
only lactation consultant on staff. I would like some
input from any of you who are in a similar situation.
Obviously, we do not have a high enough census to have
a full time lactation consultant, so I am figuring
about 24 or so hours a week. My next dilemma is, in
order to see every nursing patient, I can't really say
that I will work for example, "8 hours on Monday,
Wednesday, Thursday". I will need to be here on
weekends to do rounds as well, see outpatients as
needed, offer support group and am planning on having
them come in post-discharge for a weight check. So, I
guess what I would like to know is if any of you are
in this same situation will you please email me and
tell me how you work things out as far as hours and
coverage.
Thanks.
Cathy Conley
