Kathy,
I don't know if the pain is positional or not, but physical exam can elicit
exquisite pain along the dermatome. Sometimes a PCR is done (DNA test) for
diagnosis. Sometimes the lesions appear after the prodrome and can be
cultured. For both of my friends I gave them ComfortGel pads to wear and
they said it greatly relieved the symptoms (pain and itching). They both
took Acyclovir too. Hope this helps.

Thanks Linda,
Shingles had actually occurred to me. Two questions:
1) Is the pain positional with shingles
2) In the absence of lesions how do you diagnose it - if I sent her back
to her OB what suggestion could I include in re detective work?
Kathy
