My response to an editorial (similar to what is currently being said on
Lactnet) re the "horror" of elective c-seactions.

RE: Editorial: The Push Against Vaginal Birth, Birth, Sept 2003
To the Editor:
As an educated, informed consumer who actively advocates for breastfeeding,
kangaroo care, co-bedding, and attachment parenting, I was concerned that your
editorial implied that any well-informed woman would naturally choose not to
have a cesarean birth.
As a generally healthy woman professional, and based on my reading of the
literature, I would choose a cesarean over a VBAC for myself.
Despite the claims of several well-meaning natural childbirth organizations
that it is the woman’s right to choose, a decision other than natural
childbirth is often labeled an error in her judgment, based on misinformation, or
worse, biased information, from the woman’s health care providers. Women make
medical decisions for many reasons: medical, social and emotional. As a medical
professional I have a responsibility to relay the risks and benefits of any
treatment as accurately and fairly as I can. Unfortunately (for me), risks and
benefits are constantly moving targets, and highly individual.
Please don’t label all of us who would choose an elective cesarean section
(for our own personal, and varied reasons) as misinformed dupes of the
healthcare system.
